An Attitude Of Gratitude

It’s so easy to come down with feelings of self-pity and find yourself sitting, yet again at another pity party! I attended one briefly last night. Pity parties suck, but when you are at one, you don’t even realize how terrible it is until you leave and remember how great life really is. Then you vow to never attend one again, but for some reason life likes to throw a lot of them and even though you think you are strong enough to avoid them, occasionally you will find yourself accepting an invitation.

What I have discovered helps me from slipping into self-pity is to maintain an attitude of gratitude and create love lists or gratitude lists.

Yesterday I was falling into self-pity and asking Craig to help me. Whenever I ask him, guess what that clever man says? “Go read your blog.” As if I wanted to hear that! He really is smart though because what he was really saying is that I already know how to help myself out of it. That is usually when I lace up my shoes, get out into that sunshine and take on a grateful attitude for my life and keep on walking or running until that self-pity fades away.

I wanted to share with you an example of a gratitude list.

Today I am grateful for:

1) The Sun!

Sunshine makes me happy! Where would we be without the sun? It sustains our planet and gives life. The sun is also a great mood-booster and it is available nearly everyday. I love to get outside in the sun everyday if I can. Ahh! Beautiful sunshine.

2) Our Beautiful Home

Although it is a lot to clean, I love our home. It has such character! When we first moved in we felt like we were staying at a hotel. We have lot’s of room here and it’s yellow!

3) Health

I am grateful for the fact that I can go out for a walk everyday and that I am healthy. When I first began walking 2 years ago, I only went out for 20 minutes, now I go for an hour everyday and that is just my leisure activity. Also, since becoming vegan, I have never gotten sick. Before becoming vegan, I was always on some kind of antibiotics for something and getting no energy at all from the foods I was eating. My decisions to eat a healthy vegan diet and take time to exercise have been great investments in my health. Now I can run like the wind and it feels amazing!

4) Yoga

Yoga makes me feel so good. It helps me to recognize the places within myself that I am holding onto thoughts and feelings (fears) that I am living and embodying. As I reach a point in the pose where it is very difficult, I can see that there is resistance in my mind. It is a practice to breathe into it and let it go. This practice enables me to do likewise in any difficult situation that life presents. It is a practice because we need to develop this overtime.

With all the craziness in the world, our true self is often clouded by the fear and energy of others. I practice yoga at least 5 times a week. It helps me to be in a state of love and gratitude no matter where I am and what situation I may be in.

5) Digital Photography

The fact that we can take beautiful pictures and have memories to hold onto is awesome. I love to take pictures and hang them around the house, it helps me to remember what to be grateful for and all the beautiful things in life.

6) My Daughters

Beautiful inside and out. One little giggle cures me every time. The joy that children have is so contagious. My little princesses make life so amazing and have taught me so much, like to slow down, not be so serious and enjoy life. They are always offering me opportunities to practice patience and be a more loving person. Being a stay-at-home mom is truly the best job that there is.

7. Vegan Food, Cookbooks and Food Blogs

There is something so healing about being in the kitchen, creating delicious, healthy meals. Chopping veggies or making wholesome cookies always makes me feel accomplished. I am grateful for the dedicated vegans who take the time to dish out amazing recipes and share their passion for health and delicious food with the world.

Some blogs I love are:

Oh She Glows

Dreena’s Vegan Recipes

Choosing Raw

The people who went through the nitty-gritty of life and came out inspirational people and left us with a bit of wisdom. I love to keep quotes around the house to inspire me and remind me of what is really important in life.

9. Water

How much do we take having fresh water for granted? With so many people in the world dying from dehydration and finding themselves with none absolutely none, we really should be more grateful for this. Be grateful for it and conserve it! Don’t leave the tap running and use less. Save your dishwater, take less showers and when running a bath, plug the tub before turning the water on.  There are so many water conservation tips that you can check out here.

We watched a great documentary a while ago called  Flow For The Love Of Water. It talks about how scarce fresh water really is becoming and how it is like blue gold. Check it out sometime.

10. Mochi

Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. It is also the name of our kitten. I love having a pet, they are also mood boosters. Studies show that interacting with a pet helps to reduce levels of harmful neurochemicals in the body and raise the good ones.

Well, there are 10 things that I am grateful for. I realize that Craig didn’t make the list, but you know I love him. 😉

Really the list could go on and on. There is so much in life to be grateful for always, it is only up to us to see the positive things in life. I think that each one of us can at least think of ten things to be grateful for every day.

Next time you feel like you might just accept an invitation to a pity party, get out a pen and paper and  make a list of everything in life you are grateful for. Don’t let yourself get down! Chose to open up your eyes to the beauty that is all around you and take time to enjoy this beautiful day!
