Tofu Bacon My Heart

We have a little song that we sing around here.

Tofu bacon my heart.

You know, like don’t go breaking my heart?

Kesa made it up. Actually, she thought that those were really the lyrics to the song. Now it has become a hit around here. We listen to a lot of 70’s music and the girls make up their own lyrics to many of the songs.

Today I made tofu bacon. This is something that I make quite often. It is good at breakfast, with pancakes, at lunch in a wrap or sandwich or any time really. The girls love their tofu bacon and could eat the whole batch at once if I am not careful to monitor their tofu bacon intake.

I love a nice tofu bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich (TLT) with roasted garlic or red pepper hummus on whole wheat bread.

This sandwich was the highlight of my day.

So, for lack of any creative or exciting post for today I am sharing the tofu bacon recipe again. If you haven’t tried it you should.

Baked Tofu Bacon

Makes 22 slices of ‘bacon’

Ingredients

  • 1 (375 g) package extra firm tofu, pressed
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce or shoyu
  • 2 teaspoons hickory liquid smoke

Directions

Cut the pressed tofu width wise into 22 equal strips and place each tofu strip into a shallow casserole or baking dish.

Whisk together the maple syrup, soy sauce or shoyu and liquid smoke in a liquid measuring cup.

Pour the syrup/smoke mixture over top of the tofu and allow to marinate at least 30 minutes or overnight in the fridge (the longer it marinates, the more flavors will absorb).

Once the tofu has marinated, preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the tofu strips onto the baking sheet and into the oven to bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping over halfway through the baking time. Tofu bacon is ready when browned and slightly dried out.

Allow to cool before eating. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Autumn also loves her tofu bacon sandwiches.

And Kesa? Well, she always has her special orders. Nothing on her plate can touch and no food can touch dip or ketchup even though she will not eat her food without dip or ketchup.

When I saw these plates at the second hand store for 10 cents I knew that I had to get them.

At least she loves her raw vegetables. Especially her peppers.

  2. I’ve only made a panfried version, but this look easier! With a baby in the house I don’t have time to stand around the stove tending tofu bacon. I think this is on the menu this weekend!

    • I just made a batch tonight. I doubled the recipe because we love to have it in wraps and sandwiches throughout the week. Just make sure to marinate it long enough (at least 30 minutes). It is so yummy! 🙂

      • I couldn’t resist, I had to make up a batch right away! While my oatmeal was cooking I went ahead and sliced up my tofu and put it in the marinade. I’ll let it marinate for a few hours until lunch or dinner.

  3. It turned out great! I put in less sweetener and added some nutritional yeast b/c that’s how I like mine. I’ll definitely be doing this again! With some of it I added it to some vegan mac’n’cheese (from Vegan Diner) with a dash of liquid smoke – yummers!
