More Than ‘Just A Mom’

Yesterday when I was on a walk with the girls I asked Autumn what she wanted to be when she got older. I then told her all the things that I used to want to be when I was a little girl. I used to want…

  • to be a teacher
  • to be a nurse
  • to be an actress
  • to have my own restaurant
  • to be a hairdresser
  • to be a dancer
  • to play music (clarinet) and teach music
  • to be a writer
  • to inspire others
  • to be married and to be a mom

Sometimes I look back on my life and wonder what I could have been if I didn’t have kids…what road I would have chosen, but on that walk last night I realized that who I am today is all of those things. I am a teacher, teaching my kids both with homeschooling and in life through my example.

I am a nurse, taking care of everybody emotionally and physically. Kissing boo boos, preparing meals, listening to their frustrations or heartaches and making sure that they have a peaceful and healthy environment to thrive in.

I am an actress, when I have to persuade the kids to do things or make fun of a situation. Sometimes I even have to pretend to be happy or energetic even when I really don’t feel like it and have to entertain them or make them smile. I am a pretty good actress actually.

I have my own restaurant and sometimes even have to fill special orders (more often than I would like to).

Along with running my own restaurant, I am also a house keeper. I do the laundry and clean up after everyone too! It is a never-ending job.

I am a hairdresser, with two beautiful heads of hair to style.

I am a dancer, dancing around the living room to music and being silly with my girls.

I am a music teacher, teaching Autumn to read music and some basics on the clarinet.

I am a writer. I write this blog and share and connect with others. Hopefully I even inspire some people too!

I married my soul mate and together we have three beautiful girls.

I always loved the name Sara when I was little and would name my baby doll Sara. Now I have Kesara and Serafina. I guess I still really like that name! 🙂

I am a mom, but I am much more than that and all of you other mom’s are too! You are more than ‘”just a mom.” In fact, you have the most important job in the whole world!

Don’t ever forget that! 🙂

  1. I love this post. I do not have kids (yet) but can still relate to the sentiments you describe. As a young, married, currently-working-full-time, woman who aspires to someday be “just a mom”, I love to hear about other strong, capable, dynamic mom’s and all the wonderful, VERY important things that mom’s do-for their families and for their communities. Nice post. A good friend of mine blogged her response to the question, “What kind of woman stays at home with her children for 10 years?” on her blog, “The Adventures of Maureen” http://adventuresofmaureen.blogspot.com/2011/04/what-kind-of-woman-stays-at-home-for-10.html women like you and my friend Maureen are an encouragement and an inspiration to me. 🙂
