Cure For The Rainy Day Blues

Another rainy day! 😦

Luckily, I remember the cure for rainy day blues… FUN!

Today was fun-filled! We sent rainy day blues on it’s way with a lot of coloring…

and drawing (fairies of course).

Play-doh creations…

(Autumn makes one mean play-doh cake!)

And of course DANCING! The girls danced the afternoon away to Classic Disney music.

Then it was time for a snack and mommy to get creative. So, today I present to you, Soft Baked Whole Wheat Cinnamon Pretzels!

Soft Baked Whole Wheat Cinnamon Pretzels

This is a great recipe for kids to get them in the kitchen and having fun. The whole wheat dough makes for a healthy snack bread. Shape the dough into standard pretzels or get creative and make whatever shapes your heart desires!

Makes 6 pretzels

  • 1 tablespoon dry active yeast
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sunflower oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Cinnamon Topping

  • 3 tablespoon sunflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl and set aside

Directions

In a medium bowl combine the yeast, warm water and maple syrup and let sit 5 minutes, until foamy. Add the sunflower oil and sea salt. Next add the flour 1/2 cup at a time until fully incorporated. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead the dough for a few minutes until soft. Preheat the oven to 400° F. Separate the dough into 6 equal sections, then roll each dough ball out into long strips and create whatever shapes your little imagination desires! Makes 6 pretzels.

Or just eat your dough if you aren’t feeling at all creative and you suspect no one is looking at you or snapping pictures…

Autumn wanted to make a butterfly.

We also made a flower, heart and the letters A and K.

Top the pretzels with the cinnamon/sugar mixture.

The girls had fun doing this with their fingers because they kept getting to lick them!

Ready for the oven!

Bake for 10-13 minutes or until golden.

Serve warm with a nice glass of almond milk.

Variations: You could also top these with canola oil and salt or Italian seasoning and garlic or make pizza pretzels with sauce and Parmesan cheese. We are going to try a different variation next time, but these were great and made the house smell so sweet.

After we made the pretzels, I decided to do something about Autumn’s unruly hair.

And I even got Kesa to take off her watermelon hat long enough to put a ponytail in, although she was not too thrilled about it!

Then she decided to pack her bag.

She took lots of toys and food of course, but no pants!

She took all the fruit and left the canned goods, packaged items and the candy! (smart girl)

Then she blew me a kiss good-bye and was on her way.

I don’t know whether it was because she saw how rainy it was out there (and figured that she would probably have to wear pants) or because of her great love for me, but she decided to stay.

Of course pretzel bribery had nothing to do with that decision. 😉

  1. This was a fun activity for Jack my almost 3 year old. Olivia my 16month old enjoyed licking her fingers from the cinnamon topping. My husband loved the taste of these pretzels too. We are cinnamon obsessed in our household so I will be baking these pretzels often. Thankyou for such a great recipe. I love baking with whole wheat flour and using maple syrup and other ‘natural’ sugars. You have inspired me to cut out sugar from baking and replace it with better, more natural sweeteners.

    • I am so glad you guys enjoyed it! We too love cinnamon! My kids also love the Glazed Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls that I make. They are so moist and delicious. Thank you for commenting, I love to hear feedback on the recipes!
