Wouldn’t it be nice if cookbooks wrote themselves? I am trying to get the fire under my but and get this ball rolling, this task just seems so overwhelming! I don’t know where to start. Every time I start, I get frustrated about it and almost want to just give up altogether! Then I see other cookbooks and know that I could totally have one and a good one too. If these people can do it, I can too and I already have all the recipes ready to go.
I guess that I should start with making PDF’s of all of the recipes and designing the actual book. That is what I would like to do and just make it my goal to do one recipe a day. Easy, right? Wrong! There are so many little things to consider, like what font to use, what size font, how the page should be layed out, how many recipes per page, what size and shape the book should be, what the book should be called, etc. Then do I self-publish or get a publisher? I was hoping that this would all be a lot easier. I wish I had someone to do it for me or that there were two of me. One to be a wife and mother and take care of the home and come up with the recipes and one to write the cookbook. Life is so crazy busy every day but I keep on putting one foot in front of the other trying to balance all areas of my life. It is not easy though!
So today I am going to research this cookbook thing a little bit more. It is just so frustrating because I really do have good recipes and pictures and I KNOW that I can do this, I just don’t know where to start. Any suggestions/advice?
What would you like to see in a cookbook? What would you call my cookbook if you were me? What do you think is different about the recipes I come up with? What do you like about the recipes or this blog?
Any words of encouragement or advice would be extremely helpful and appreciated beyond words.
Love you all!
First of all, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog. You have done an amazing job with it.
Good for you for deciding to write a cookbook. Your recipes are tasty and very accessible! I am not vegan but all of the recipes appeal to me as a meat-eating individual.
I have been thinking a lot about your cookbook, and being a cookbook FANATIC myself I could totally see you coming out with one. I would definitely include your “in my vegan pantry” at the beginning, and a blurb on how veganism has helped you find health and balance in your life.
I have a lot more to say – I will try to think up some names, angles, etc – but I’d love to email you more as the thoughts come to me!
I am so excited for you – and take your time with the book. It will all come together as it should. And I really think it will.
Thank you Courtney! 🙂
My favorite, favorite, favorite thing about your recipes is that they are kid friendly! I couldn’t tell you how many of your recipes are in rotation at my house. Just last night we made your garlic pizza crust and it was awesome! It was easy and straight forward. Your ingredients are always things that we have on hand and are rarely without. That is a big plus when you are a stay at home mom with a gaggle of girls and husband to feed… and everything else that goes with being the designated home and hearth leader. (As you well know)
Nothing of yours that I use scares my girls. That is such a relief because there are some things that we try out there from other books and web sites that leave us “hoping for the best”… and often disappointed or down right revolted. So, really, you take all of the fright out of it for us.
Another thing that I love? Your writing is lovely. Not just from a technical stand point but because it is heart felt. You have an uncanny ability to make it feel like we are in the kitchen with you or that we are in this together. That is a neat gift.
So Tiffany, don’t sweat this. You can do it and do it well… in your own style. Breathe. I will be one of the first to buy this book… and all the books that come after.
As far ask the name? As the girls. They will probably surprise you with the things that they come up with or say something that sparks in your brain… and lead you to the perfect name for YOUR book.
You are doing great. Thank you for trying.
As always, thanks for your encouraging words! I am glad that your family enjoys the recipes and that you enjoy the blog! 🙂
I think that some of your questions could be answered by speaking with a publisher (a smaller one that takes on these types of books, like “How It All Vegan”)… If you choose to use a publisher, I don’t think you need to walk in with a completed book. You could take in some sample pages or a complete chapter with recipes and photos to showcase your idea. Try not to worry about the little details, as they may tweek them before printing. After talking with them then decide if you’re more comfortable self publishing.
You can do this 🙂
