For My Children

If I could, I would be invincible. I would have super health and super strength. I could make it through any day without getting exhausted. We’d have fun all day and I’d be able to make you all the food you want and take you anywhere you want to go. Money would grow on trees and we could just pick what we need and take a little spontaneous adventure. If I could, I would stay up and laugh with you and play with you and watch every season of every show we want to watch together.

In a perfect world, there would be no getting tired or old or sick. But I’m not perfect. I’m just a human. I am frail and weak in body and in mind and soul at times. I am not invincible and I’m not going to live forever but my wish for you and for us is that you will remember the good times that we had and that you will remember that I was human. And even though I was human and I had my drawbacks as a human, I gave my best and I tried with all my might to give you the life that I wanted to give to you and that you needed. I didn’t do it perfectly. I had my issues and my ailments. But I want you to know that you’ve always been the center of my existence. You’ve given my life meaning and you’ve taught me the biggest lessons I’ve ever needed to know in this big play we call life.

So I thank you and I hope that you cherish the good times and remember the best times. And that above all you love me as much as I love you and remember me fondly with a warmness in your heart. I hope that the love that we share together will go on for eternity and beyond. I love you all so much and I wish you to have the happiest, healthiest lives that you can and right now I just hope that I can model to you how to be a good human being, how to give your best, how to stand up for what you believe in and to never, ever, ever, let anybody take your freedom away.

Never let anybody tell you that you can’t be you and you can’t do what you want to do in your life. Dream. Be free to be yourself and enjoy every minute of this precious gift.

Whether you are sick or healthy whether things are happy or not-so-happy in the moment, just enjoy everything, every bit that you are given.

See the lessons in everything. Life will present you with all kinds of things that seem like negatives but there’s always, always, always a positive in it. There’s always a lesson to learn for your spirit’s growth.

You will never be perfect and you won’t have all the things that you dream of, the road to your dreams won’t always be smooth and easy, but you can try and you can enjoy the little successes along the way, even with the inevitable setbacks.

Treat others kindly and fairly. Don’t judge another person, especially in superficial ways. Never think of yourself as better than the other. You can always learn something from even the person you’d think would be least likely to learn anything from.

Stay humble and grateful and always give your best and love your hardest. Never forget your conscience and use it to guide you when I can’t be there for you to help. And even when I am, don’t always listen to what I say, but check with what it feels like inside of yourself.

Remember all of our walks and our talks. Remember the stories that I used to write and the books we used to read. Remember the cookies and muffins we baked and the times you did dishes and we’d listen to music and dance and sing around.

Remember the meals we shared together at the table and the times we would sit in the yard. Remember going to the store together and checking the mail. Remember the special birthday and Christmas presents that we had ordered.

Remember the swimming lessons and the piano lessons. Remember the festivals and the dance classes. Remember the trips to Grandma and Grandpa’s beach. Remember the Dairy Queen trips for ice cream and the Value Village Thrift shopping. Remember the kisses and the cuddles and the more serious motherly advice.

It is because of you that I am a mother. And now what has been created, this mother, wants to pass onto you the wisdom I have gathered throughout this thirteen-and-a-half year journey.

May the gift that you have given me and the person you have changed me into return a most reverential gift to you as well. May you live and learn and love unceasingly for all of your days. ❤

…..

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers out there! This day is about our children as much as it is about us, for it is they who have made us who we are today.

Take time for yourself and enjoy your day but also look humbly upon your children as beings who have changed your life forever in such beautiful, intangible ways.
