Happy Things

Winter is sure on its way! The wind is blowing cold from the north, it is starting to snow, and it is getting darker out earlier every day. Last winter I was so busy testing recipes and working on putting together my book, that the winter seemed to almost slip right on by. This winter, I have yet to figure out what I will do to keep myself busy. Long and dark, cold nights are not exactly ingredients for happiness, especially for someone who loves to be outside and in the sunshine.

Most evenings these days seem to be very slow-moving. Lately Kesa has even been asking to go to bed at only 6:00pm. So I have been trying to keep the girls (and myself) occupied in the evenings. Sometimes we bake a batch of cookies or do a craft, play a game or dance to some music and every night we do story time just before bed. Still, there are many hours in the evening that there is really not much to do with and so we’ve been spending a little time on the computer watching videos on youtube. The girls like Bear In The Big Blue House or KidsTV123 and I love music! I love to listen to music and watch videos of performers on the computer when I have nothing else to do. Good music always lifts my spirit!

I am still very much in love with Jason Mraz music. I think he is such a talented guy and also a lyrical genius. I especially love his latest album, Love is a Four Letter Word, the songs on that album are so uplifting. He is also a raw vegan and does yoga, so to me that makes him all the more awesome. Here are some songs that make me happy.

Ben Howard is another favorite artist of mine. His music is so peaceful and relaxing.

Or there is always Jack Johnson!

We also like to look at old family pictures or videos. This one from last winter of the girls dancing is hilarious. They sure have some funky moves! 🙂

If am not watching videos, I am collecting quotes that I love. Here are a few of my latest favorites.

When all else fails and you still find yourself bored, you can always count your blessings! 🙂

What makes you happy? What helps you to get through the long, dark winter nights?

  1. I know what you mean about finding things to do in the winter. This fall we have gone to the creek at the bottom of our road every day…and i love that we’re loving the outdoors. I hope to continue to be out at least a little each day, even when the snow comes. Even shoveling snow, along with fun things like snowshoeing, can be so exhilarating. I agree it is also such a cozy time to be indoors, though–National Geographic vids on YouTube are our favorites. I’m also thinking about letting her watch the Magic School Bus ones–we read the books frequently–though I’m afraid once she starts with the cartoons she won’t want to go back to the real life stuff! A little of each should be fine, though. 🙂

    • I try to get outside everyday, even if just for a little while, unless it is freezing out. We always at least a three mile (1 hour) walk daily. We even go for walks in the rain and look crazy. I really love nature and being outside as much as possible. I will check out National Geographic. Our kids love Planet Earth and BBC Life. I also encourage real life over cartoons, still, some animated stuff teaches good life lessons too. Thanks Mia! 🙂

  2. We find the dark evenings hard too. We live in the country so once the light is gone, it is gone. No streetlights at all. We once tried parking the car with the high beams on at one end of the road while we walked but it didn’t work out too well. We read books, play, and read some more books. My little man is getting some board games for Christmas so soon we will have a little something extra to get us through the evenings.

Jason Mraz – oh yes!!! And great quotes, as always. Enjoy your weekend.

    • That would be hard to be in total darkness. Books are always great. I think we will be reading many this winter. I love reading aloud to the girls. We will be done the last Little House On The Prairie book tonight, but I guess that there are more about Laura’s daughter Rose that we are thinking of reading. I love the classics! I was also thinking of bored games. We don’t have many kid-friendly ones.

Have a good weekend too! 🙂
