The Things They Say

I am constantly amazed at how much my little girls teach me. I learn so much from them and so I decided to keep track of some of their wisdom and some of the funny things they say that I want to remember by writing it down. Here are a few that I thought I would share.

We are in the habit of picking up garbage/recycling whenever we go out on a walk. I just can’t leave garbage laying on the ground if I can help it. The girls instinctively pick it all up and put it in the bottom of the stroller, without any thought and later on at home we sort it out.

Well, out on our walks there are often empty beer cans laying on the side of the road that the girls go to pick up. I wasn’t so sure I wanted to be walking around pushing my baby in the stroller with empty beer cans in the bottom but I figured, what the heck, I am teaching them something good here and I can’t worry what people might think if they might see them. I know that they aren’t mine.

Beer cans are one thing, but then one day Autumn picked up an empty vodka bottle and I had to say,“No, leave that one Autumn”.

Autumn: “Why?”

Me: “That one is an empty alcohol bottle and that might not look so good in the bottom of mommy’s stroller.”

Autumn: “Why do people need alcohol anyway?”

Me: “They don’t need it, they just want it. Some people use drugs or alcohol to make themselves happy, but it’s not really a good thing because what happens is they get addicted to it and then they aren’t happy without it.”

Autumn pauses and then says, “People don’t have to be happy all the time!”

I had to laugh because she really is so wise. I thought that was such a message for me, always trying to be perfect, positive and stay happy.

One day we were sitting in the living room on the couch after dinner. I had had a long day cleaning and cooking and so I said to Craig, “Aren’t I a good woman?” Kesa then quickly responded, “You’re not a woman, you’re a mom!”

Yes Kesa, that is true.

We all had a real good laugh.

And my favorite quote from Autumn, “When I grow up I am going to get a giant garbage bag and pick up all the garbage in the world!”

  1. I love this! We too, have the same habit of picking up trash and putting in the bottom of the stroller when we are out for walks. I was simply amazed at my one-year old when on the first day I started doing this after a few times, she began pointing to the trash along the way! I couldn’t believe she knew what I was doing and was helping me! I had to pick up every tiny piece of trash that day!

  2. oh my gosh, if only we could teach our children they don’t always have to be “good” or happy… my what a lot of therapy we would be saving them from. that’s great she already knows that!
